Angels & DemonsA Personal View

When I read the book years ago, I wanted to know how would it look like on the screen, I never thought this great novel can be adapted as movie. I was right and wrong. The novel as it is cannot be done in a movie, but the story can. Ron Howard did a good job turning it to a film though I expected a bit more.

The thing I liked about the movie adaptation is that there was an unexpected ending to the movie totally not how the novel ends; this makes you a bit surprised when it happens. I hoped that I would see more about the assassin, which was completely ignored from the personal view, who just appeared as a cold hearted paid hit man. While in the novel there is a story behind every character including this criminal. I also missed the totally removed character “Maximilian Kohler” the one who was supposed to be the manager of CERN. Anyway, I believe the adaptation was good enough.

The Story

Unlike the novel, the story begins when the Vatican asks Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) to help them find the canister that is threatening to destroy the whole Vatican City. Along with the help of Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), a scientist at CERN and the daughter of the scientist who was killed and his own eye used to access CERN and steal the canister, to help find where the canister is. The Vatican is in deep sorrow for the death of the pope, and busy electing the new pope as well. The Camerlingo, the chamberlain of the papal court, asks Langdon for help and seems to offer anything help this investigation.

Langdon gets shocked when he discovers that the murdered scientist was branded after killed with a burning metal on his chest “Illuminati”. The oldest enemy of the Church is now back after 500 years to revenge from the church and the crimes they did against them. There is no much time; the canister will explode causing a total wiping damage. The four cardinals that are nominated for are kidnapped, every hour the kidnapper / assassin will kill one of them in public and after that the canister will finish it all.

Langdon, with the help of Vetra and the police, has to find where the canister is. To do that they need to find “The path to illumination” through the clues that people has to find 500 years back. Langdon tries to catch any clue to do that, fails once and succeeds once till the time is about to run out.

The Complex

The story revolves around the very ancient complex that caused a lot of wars, and cost a lot of souls. Science against Religion. The war that is still on and no one can foresee when will it end. The story evolves also around the complex of finding the canister in time before it explodes causing the most horrifying damage in the history of humanity.

These two complexes cause another major complex in the movie, the relationships between “Men of Science” and “Men of God”. For the first time they had to stand side by side to prevent damage, but how can you bring two contradicted armies in one line at one war? This time, both of them are threatened by a common enemy they both created.

The Ending

The ending is shocking as you never expect it like this. Whether you read the novel or not you will be shocked by the ending, though I was a little disappointed by the line of story that I missed a lot of what I expected to see but I still enjoyed the movie in general, as the ending scenes looked different than the book and they attracted you to really concentrate on the fact that you want to see what really will happen.

The Making

One of the best things about the movie that I will not ever regret watching is the making of it. The places looked so real and genuine, though most of the Churches in the book refused to host the filming but you feel that the movies was filmed inside them for real.

The scenery is fantastic, that is the least you can say about it. All over the wide screen you can see the most beautiful views of the Vatican City. What also amazed me is the clear picture. You can barely notice a scratch in it. All in all, the movie was made to be seen, just see it.
